Jean Bernhardt is a family nurse practitioner and administrative director at the MGH Charlestown Healthcare Center in Boston, MA. Previously she was employed at the North End Community Health Center in Boston, MA. Jean also holds an appointment at the MGH Institute of Health Professions as an Assistant Professor in the DNP program. Her academic focus is in health care administration, strategic business planning and executive leadership development. Dr. Bernhardt serves on BACH as the the Mass League of Community Health Centers Boston Conference representative.
Jean received her BSN from Fitchburg State College; a MSN with a concentration in Primary Nursing in Society from the University of Virginia; a MHSA from St. Joseph’s College, Windham, ME; and a doctorate in the Nursing and Health Policy from the University of Massachusetts Boston. She has additional clinical training and experience in humanitarian response and caring for patients with addictions.
Dr. Bernhardt has worked in a variety of clinical settings, including work in rural health, clinical and classroom instruction and as a private consultant. In addition to her certification as a family nurse practitioner, she is a licensed nursing home administrator and certified in nursing administration, advanced by the ANCC. She has received numerous awards in recognition of outstanding performance and commitment to excellence in the areas of quality and innovative service design. Her doctoral research focused on the influence of health insurance toward reducing obesity in young adults. Jean’s areas of interest are strengthening the role of nursing in the community, the contribution of self-care/self-management to health outcomes, the utility of policy and politics to improve health and health care services and delivery, and the application of nursing leadership toward organizational effectiveness.
