Historic multi-family buildings, such as New England’s iconic three-deckers, once provided affordable options for renters as well as a path to homeownership. As communities confront rising housing costs and growing demand for equitable access to housing, can these historically affordable buildings be adapted to meet current needs, or will they be replaced with newer forms of housing? Can we preserve affordability in our housing stock while also preserving historic building types, neighborhood character, and urban density?

Historic New England convenes leading advocates in affordable housing and historic preservation to examine the past, present, and future of our region’s historic multi-family housing. Poster session for students in preservation, architecture, planning and related fields.
